Remembering Dražen Petrović 28 Years Later

On this day, 28 years ago, Dražen Petrović, a member of the Croatia basketball team and one of the best Croatian athletes of all time, died in a car accident on a highway in Germany, on June 7, 1993. He was only 29 years old and I remember he was an idol of our generation. Cibona and Real Madrid were unreachable to all European clubs when Dražen played in their ranks. Having achieved everything in Europe, he played in New Jersey Nets and after Jersey he went to the strongest league in the world - the NBA. Back then that was impossible but was a phenomenal talent who made and he opened doors to NBA to future basketball players. He had such artistic skills on the basketball court 'Mozart of Basketball' or simply as 'Amadeus'…

In 1993, Petrović's jersey number 3 was retired by the Nets, and the Dražen Petrović Basketball Hall was named after him in his honor. He has few Halls of fame; In Zagreb in Cibona tower, he is honored in FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His death was a big loss, not only to Croatia but also worldwide.
